5 DAYS • 4 NIGHTS • SIBU TO KAPIT

RAJANG JOURNEY UPRIVER

A concentrated expedition from Sibu into the Upper Rajang, combining river landscapes, rainforest exploration and encounters with the communities and living cultures shaped by Malaysia’s longest river.

SIBU → KAPIT

THE JOURNEY

FOLLOW THE RAJANG UPRIVER

From Sibu, travel upriver along the Rajang as the landscapes gradually shift from the lower river towards the forested interior of Sarawak.

Over five days, the journey combines unhurried river travel with local food, rainforest exploration, historic Kapit and an expedition beyond the Pelagus Rapids to communities of the Upper Rajang.

It is a shorter journey than Into Deep Borneo, but one that still carries travellers beyond the familiar and into a part of Sarawak shaped by the river.

DAY BY DAY

FIVE DAYS. DEEPER UPRIVER.

DAY 1

BEGINNING UPRIVER

Board Borneo River Cruise in Sibu in the morning and settle into your cabin with a welcome drink and cool towel.

Before noon, we leave the city behind and begin travelling upriver along the Rajang.

During the afternoon, visit a local fruit orchard and discover seasonal tropical fruits and produce grown along the river.

As evening approaches, gather by the riverside for a relaxed BBQ dinner accompanied by local songs and cultural performances — an atmospheric beginning to the journey upriver.

OVERNIGHT · ONBOARD NEAR NANGA NGEMAH

DAY 2

THE RIVER, UNHURRIED

Continue upriver as settlements become smaller and the landscapes increasingly reflect Sarawak’s interior.

Spend the morning onboard, taking in the river from the open deck or joining a hands-on activity such as local cooking, ulam preparation, beading or batik.

Watch for birds and river life as the vessel continues towards Kapit.

By evening, arrive in one of the Upper Rajang’s most important historic river towns.

OVERNIGHT · ONBOARD IN KAPIT

DAY 3

KAPIT & THE RAINFOREST

Begin the day at Teresang Market, exploring local produce and jungle ingredients alongside your guide and chef.

Continue to Fort Sylvia to discover stories from Kapit’s Brooke-era history and its role along the Upper Rajang.

After lunch onboard, leave town behind for a moderate guided rainforest trek, observing ferns, tropical plants, insects and the smaller details of Borneo’s forest environment.

Return to the vessel in Kapit for the evening.

OVERNIGHT · ONBOARD IN KAPIT

DAY 4

BEYOND THE RAPIDS

After an early breakfast, transfer to our smaller expedition vessel and travel beyond Kapit towards the Pelagus Rapids and the Upper Rajang.

Continue to Punan Bah and encounter a Punan community whose relationship with the surrounding forest includes traditions such as Molong — an approach to the careful use and stewardship of natural resources.

Discover the remarkable Kelirieng burial poles before continuing to an Iban longhouse, where living traditions may include Pua Kumbu weaving, Terendak craftsmanship, sampan construction, rattan mat weaving and fishing-net making.

Explore nearby gardens and crops, including Sarawak pepper, before returning by expedition vessel to Kapit.

OVERNIGHT · ONBOARD IN KAPIT

DAY 5

FROM RIVER TO ROAD

Enjoy breakfast onboard before saying goodbye to your floating home and disembarking in Kapit.

From here, continue by scheduled coach through Sarawak’s interior towards Sibu, completing the journey by road after four nights travelling upriver.

The transfer to Sibu is included in your expedition fare.
